Penultimate day of 2008 at Greystone

It is summer at Greystone and the gardens are showing the effect of warm temperatures and sufficient rain during late November and December.

Picasso has taken to his summer position for sleeping underneath the fig tree. He loves the new stone wall for the odd foray into the orchard garden to check on the birds feeding and explaining to Evan and Sally that if there is no milk and/or food straightaway then there is nothing more for it than another telephone call to the SPCA.

The pictures speak for themselves!

Christmas day at Greystone

Sammo is hunting for wine in the cellar for starters.

Picasso is suitably attired. The silver fern flag is flying. The table is set. All the offspring have been spoken with so its on with the eating and consuming the bubbles. A lovely sunny day and a lovely Christmas Day with just Sammo and Evan and the magic of Skype.

Teachers! Teachers!! Everywhere and not much of a drop left to drink!

Yes! The teachers of Greytown School descended on Greystone to salivate and celebrate the holiday (non-class contacat time) break. Following the full assembly at Kuranui they arrived at 1330 hours and the last stragglers (leaving one vehicle behind) left around 2030 hours.

Much good-natured hilarity was the theme and was well practised and also well-oiled. The Secret Santa presents' participation was the higlight and Picasso the cat loved all the attention. It was a warm, sunny evening and Greystone's orchard area lent itself well for the occasion. Sadie turned her(him) self into the official photographer. Liz, our immediate neighbour on Kuratawhiti Street served the repast provided by "Trends" of Greytown.

The photos give a good indication of the level of frivolity - just as well the students couldn't see their lords and lordesses frm school behaving in such a very different manner to what those students are accustomed to see.

For those blog followers who pride themselves on persipicacious insight - guess which photo shows Sadie the photographer's feet!

Kristina's birthday today

Yes, that's right its birthday time again for Mrs Kristina Martin. Great for Mum and Dad to talk with her again today and congratulate her for coming into our lives all those (not too many) years ago.

The picture shows Mrs Kristina at left with one of her sisters, Mrs Suzanne Dawn at their Mum's knees-up in August 08 at Greystone.

We are looking forward to her and Greg coming down to Kiwiland in February 09 for Greg's 20 year graduation celebrations with class mates at Massey and his Mum Andrea's 70th birthday. It looks like the Rimutaka Incline on the mountain bikes is on the cards for them and taking in the wineries at Mrs Martin's Borough in Martinborough.

Time certainly flies since it is now two years since we celebrated Kristina's major birthday in St Martin with friends from Washington DC and Switzerland plus Master Isaac from Brisbane.

Best wishes from Greystone Kristina Anna-Marie!

The Class of 08 and Sammo at Greystone for sausages and presents from Secret Santa

Sammo's class of 08 from Greytown Primary School walked up to Greystone via the Soldiers Memorial Park (for games) and ate sizzled sausages, bread, muffins, cake and all sorts (not licquorice all sorts though!). Following lunch and cuddling the ever available Picasso the big fat cat they settled down for waiata (the singing was delightful) and karakia before opening their SecretSanta presents. After some two hours (was really only two hours?) they toddled off back to school walking two by two.

22 happy little souls, filled with food, orange juice and with their presents AND "doing what teachr told them to do (mostly anyway)' they got back to school just in time to be 'let out.' Five parent helpers were on hand to assist. A happy occasion and well worh the adults' efforts.

Greystone Christmas Update

The lights, trees and general paraphernalia for celebrating Christmas are being installed. Just wait for the photos to be taken once the decorations are complete. Sammo's class are due at Greystone tomorrow for their Christmas function, since school finishes this coming Friday the 19th. On Friday evening the teachers will be celebrating school's finish, Christmas and the impending summer vacation at Greystone. 'Trends' owner Mr Peter I who provided Kristina and Gregs wedding breakfast (1991), Evan's 60th (2004) and Sammo's 60th (2008) will be providing the comestibles.

Greystone have a new BBQ, first run yesterday! This will provide the sizzled sausages for the children tomorrow. The old 'steam driven' BBQ that saw so much action from 1987 is in an advisory position round the back of "Lillehus.' "Just call me if you need me!" he croaked when told of his retirement. Greystone now has a retired cat (name of Picasso), a retired BBQ (never was named) and an somewhat older male person, retired, (alias Sadie, Morfar, Farfar, Dad, Darl, Evan and sometimes???). Of course every menagerie needs a Boss. Sammo does sterling work in this area and even set up a licquorice all sorts rationing system yesterday.

The balloons look rather flat and it looks as though we will need the grandsons to blow them up again. They are the ones that Isaac and Lisa blew up for Sammo's 60th back in August 08. Either a re-blow or they will have to join the retired ranks as well! Christmas lights and trees' photos will be taken and added over the next few days so all the followers can enjoy a Kiwi summer Christmas.

As you will see the gardens are growing rapidly and the civil (as opposed to impolite) works are progressing well. Note the FSB's (Flexible Sun Beds) - hammocks - for those with less poetry in their souls where the 'waters' * are taken on sunny evenings.

*'Waters' is the euphemism for a long glass filled with ice, a standard quantity (a 'Danish') of greystoned gin and tonic to the top.

Isaac's Loot!

Thanks to Isaac's Dad, Carl we now have a record of Isaac's 11th birthday's loot! Watch out NZ's Black Caps you now have a demon Oz batter to contend with. Isaac, let Farfar know when the mighty bat, otherwise known as "The Kiwi Tamer" gets its first runs. Then we can put that information (as a certificate) with Farfar's bat and Carl's bat both stored in Isaac's Corner at Greystone.

What a birthday it must have been. See all the "loot" pictures. Cool books, games and Duvet (or is it a Dooner?) Can't wait to visit again. Love from Farfar, Bestemor and Picasso (the big fat 18 year old cat).

10 November 2008

Isaac is 11 years old today!

Isaac resident of Brisbane in Oz is 11 years old today! Congratulations Isaac from Greystone; Farfar, Bestemor and Picasso (the 18 year old big fat cat!). Yes, you are catching up to us. We vividly remember the day you arrived in this world, such a good looking intelligent child! When you got home with Mum she used to surround you with books - its no wonder you learnt to read at a very early age. Bestemor rang me to tell me of your birth 11 years ago today. I was at the piano being growled at by my music teacher in Lyall Bay who used to say to me, "Evan, now you are going to play this piece in Mozart time not Morch time!"

At Greystone we look forward to hearing how the day went and the 'loot' that you scored from your extended family in NZ and Oz.

Congratulations Carl and Amanda. You are doing wonderful work bringing up Isaac.

Remembrance Day - Norah Osbon my Mum

Today 3 November is my Mum's 31st Remembrance Day. Born in 1917 she and many others of similar ages endured the Great Depression as teenagers. Opportunities that later generations have taken for granted were not available to them. Many did not get the education that would have assisted them and our country to grow. Norah was required to leave school to assist with family finances along with other family members. She was very bright and made sure that her children got the educational opportunities denied to her and her siblings and other friends. She was passionate about gaining education and in the few short years before her early death just short of 60 years she enrolled at James Cook High School as an adult student to study for and get her School Certificate.

Along with many other young women during WWII she was trained as a motor mechanic whilst many others were trained in all sorts of fields traditionally reserved for the men as a necessity for the 'war effort.' They were hard times for that and the earlier generations.

The thrift and steadfast attitudes that she and Svend (my Dad) practised, whilst growing a family of four, has stood me in good stead throughout my working life. In recent months with the major economic downturn starting to bite, many of her and Svend's actions are practical examples for what may be needed to continue to prosper so that we, in our turn, can provide a better platform for our future generations.

A memoir of her life featuring her many achievements is close to completion. She would be thrilled to know how her offspring have developed with all four children achieving much of merit in their chosen fields and particularly in building strong families; now with 7 grandchildren and four great grandchildren covering NZ, Australia and Belgium. She and Svend would be delighted that the Danish family contacts have continued to be strengthened. It was not easy for her to marry an 'alien' particularly in the myopic years following WWII in NZ, but it was typical of her resolve and strength of character (ably supported and demonstrated by Svend) that has lead to the level of prosperity that we enjoy today.

New Camera

At the weekend we bought ourselves a new digital camera. A Sony DSC-H10. It is a very easy to use camera but not a point and shoot. It has several useful aspects, like it freezes the focused shot when taking photos, it has x10 zoom, on screen instructions etc.

This photo is one we took at the weekend of blossom on our pear tree and when I cropped it there was a bee. I thought it looked so cool!

Greystone flowers

The Magnolia campbelli is in full bloom and is a great sight.

The tulips in their barrels have overcome the pansies.

And the kowhai are in bloom with the Mt Fuji cherry the first of the two cherries to bloom. We always wait for the Sakura cherry at the front wall since that tells us it is Carl's birthday. Happy birthday Carl from us and the Sakura cherry.

The Greystone Viking Ship

The New Plymouth Harveys (Joaanne, Steve and Thomas) gave Evan a Viking ship with sail, oars and rudder when they were down for Sammo's knees-up!

It now hangs in the library at Greystone and is a superb gift. It symbolises very effectively both the Morch Danish and the Harvey Maori heritages. It hangs opposite Te Rangi Hiroa's (Sir Peter Buck) book entitled "Vikings of the Sunrise." The NZ Maori and the Vikings were both intrepid sailors.

Poppa Jack Robertson (in his 91st year) tees off with his favourite Saints 5 September 2008

Some time during Monday the 1st day of Spring 2008, Jack heard a call, a deep voice - "John Alexander I have something to say! "Don't bother me," said Jack, "I have things to do and by the way the name's Jack!" But the voice would not be silenced. "I have bad news and good news Jack."

"Alright what is it?" Jack replied. "The bad news is that at 5:45pm sharp you are passing over to the other side to see me,"said the deep voice. "Oh dear, so soon," said Jack, "I was looking forward to an omelette and a couple of decent size shots from the whiskey bottle at 6pm sharp! "Never mind what's the good news?"

"Your are on the tee with Saints Peter and Luke this coming Friday," the voice replied.

"But that's only a threesome," said Jack, "and a foursome has priorty, even on the other side, so I am informed."

"I have heard about your negotiation skills before," said the deep voice. "Alright then, do you have any objection to having a lady golfer in your foursome?"

"None at all," said Jack, a tone of hopefulness in his voice.

"Consider it done," said the deep voice, " but make sure you are there at 10am Friday 5 September 2008, clean shoes, clean hankey and no slicing and by the way every body plays off the stick, highest score buys the Tui beer!"

Greystone NZ flag is at half-mast for Jack's funeral day 4 September 2008.

PS. There was a tender process for the supply of beer on the other side some years back. It was a close call finally between Stella Artois and Tui. A toss decided the outcome, the coin being supplied by one of Tui's gorgeous women. An Oz beer made the final three but was disqualified when the analytical results were received which stated: "Shoot your horse it has got diabetes!"

Sammo's Knees-up 15 - 20 August 2008 - 60th birthday

The artwork is courtesy of Isaac Morch, our almost 11 year old grandson, from Brisbane.

Well what an occasion! Visitors from Brisbane, New Plymouth, Brussels, Port Campbell (Victoria, Australia), Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Greytown, the Papawai Marae representatives and last but not least Martinborough (It was their wine that we enjoyed, Hudson wine). 45 happy souls for the Friday night at the White Swan, and 48 happy, happy souls for the big sit-down at Greystone on the Saturday. Constrained revelry was the password and relaxed, well lubricated revelry mixed with patches of early sobriety (they were the ones who were slightly, fashionably late) was the result.

The White Swan in Greytown is Sammo's 'watering hole.' Various teachers regularly meet around 4 pm each Friday to wash the dust from their throats and 'talk shop.' The building has a close family connection via Evan. Evan's Dad worked for the New Zealand Railways Woburn workshop during WW II. The White Swan main building is the previous adminstration block from NZR Woburn and was transferred over the Rimutakas during 2003 for refurbishment and become such a cosy country restuarant and 'watering hole.' School and church friends of Sammo attended the Friday soiree starting at 4 pm and finsihing when the last negotiated their way through the front and back doors. Sammo and Evan's offspring were all present. How wonderful to meet up with all the offspring in such a warm environment. Lisa and partner Sonny had picked up Kristina and Sue just out of Brussels, Heathrow, Hong Kong and Auckland at Wellington airport that afternoon and driven them over the Rimutakas. Finger food complemented the house red, white, beer-on-tap and the convivial company.

If that wasn't enough the offspring organised a Champagne Breakfast (bottles of the real Bolly - what?) at Salute (Salute Eh!) on Saturday morning with all the close family; Sammo, Evan, Kristina, Joanne, Thomas, Steve, Suzanne, Carl and Isaac; it was a special and memorable event. Thomas (what a little darling, nearly four) from Taranaki found all sorts of interesting ways to spell names using the elongated sachets of sugar on various other tables.

The main event was Saturday night at Greystone and for Sammo to have all our adult offspring, in-law Steve and two grandsons in person was a wonderful present all by its-self. The warmth, friendship, goodwill and speeches (some planned, but more impromptu), showed how much each one thought well of her. The welcome from the Greytown School Kapa-Haka group to start the festivities on the Saturday set the scene so well. Their choices of waiata and the haka were very appropriate. Many thanks to the pupils of many ethnicities and, in particular, to Paora Ammunsen and Christine Robertson for their excellent leadership and coaching. Sammo's relationships and standing with the pupils of all ages is a testament to her skills as a teacher and her sound human qualities.

The Danish 'gloagg' served warm from the garage (turned into a classy country bar) fire took the edge off the somewhat cool evening and early inhibitions. Our caterer, Peter Icke and Kirsty, couldn't be with us due to a nasty bout of bronchitis, however, the staff did a great job. Peter catered for Kristina and Gregory's wedding in November 1991 in New Plymouth, Evan's 60th in January 2004 at Greystone and now Sammo's 60th August 2008. Speeches came thick and fast during the evening. The second or was it the third from Sue brought much mirth when Sammo's early exploits with stress relief (gin drinking darling!) were recounted. Cross banter made the time go so fast and enlivened the already lively evening.

Prizes were dispensed using lucky tickets supplied on the back of the place names by the lovely Lisa. First prize was a bottle of "Greystoned Gin." Second prize was two bottles of the same. Sue set the pace by auctioning the already won bottles of gin and the evening raised $300 for the Greytown Primary School Kapa Haka Group.

Much was said, all with the theme of congratulating Sally on her many achievements, the least of which was gaining the age of 60 - "the old age of youth and the youth of old age" as the Danes will have it. Two notable impromptu speeches from outside the family came from Graham Langridge (Morch Family Trust Independent Trustee) and Heather Bell (ex President NZ Reading Association) dwelling on the successful, warm family members' relationships plus achievements and Sammo's achievements in establishing the Wairarapa Reading Association chapter, respectively.

Such evenings don't take place without hard work and planning behind the scenes. The lovely Lisa Holland started work in January 2008 and her many touches resulted in such a wonderful presentation of tables, name-tags, balloons and the continuity of the evening. Carl took 10 days away from his work in HR in Bribane to oversee and do all of the shifting, lifting and keeping his Dad under control. Jo and Steve and their lively Thomas drove in from New Plymouth and were a tower of strength helping friends and relatives. Kristina and Sue, the two lovely daughters from Brussels, amazed the friends that they would come all that way for four days in Greytown for their Mum. To all our offspring and their spice (Greystone plural of spouse(s), many thanks. A special thanks to Greg Martin and Mike Vennik who stayed behind in Briussels to allow Kristina and Sue respectively to be with us! We all get the relationships in geometric proportion to what we offer.

Well there is one who needs a very special mention - Isaac - Carl and Amanda Drysdale's son. 11 years old in November 2008. Apart from all the balloon blowing, sign making (pictures to come on the blog), getting large quantities of wood for the fires, he spent 3 days with Sammo in her class following the festivities. He did this because that is what he wanted. On his last day in Greystone at 8.30 am, when he and Dad were leaving to get the plane back to Brisbane, some 3 hours later, he asked, "Can I go down and see Bestemor (his name for Sammo) at school?" "Yes," said Dad Carl. Isaac was there in 7 minutes having run the whole way!

The following day after the big knees-up it was tidy-up time! For the first time ever nothing had been touched following the party. As the electricians say, "Many hands make light work!" And so it was. Tables back to the St Lukes Church, chairs back to Greytown Primary School, washing up, tidying and Kristina's major effort mopping the entire kitchen, lounge and dining room.

A very special day with much family discussion taking place, complemented wonderfully by Evan's big sister Anna and husband Ray McCraw from Port Campbell, Victoria, Oz. Anna and Ray spent all Sunday till late discussing in-depth much family history from earlier generations for the benefit of the up-coming ones. Their own recently gained grandparent status courtesy of Kirsten, Ivan and Odyn was a cause for celebration, particularly that they are shifting to Port Campbell from Melbourne (right across the road). Thanks for your very valuable contribution.

John and Wendy Morch came from Eureka in the Waikato where they are changing a lifestyle property into one of significant magnificance. They enjoyed the festivities spending time with Anna and Ray at the Amber Court in between their time at Greystone. A long drive for them but it was worth it for all to catch up with them again.

Thomas's and Isaac's bird boxes were made by Morfar and Farfar respectively and secured by the lads with help. They decided where exactly they should go. Thomas was heard running around with a screw and scewdriver in his little hot hand singing out repeatedly 'screw Morfar!" Morfar's replies were somewhat subdued and not fit for publication. This is a family blog! Watch this blog for evidence of residency by local birds of the avian persuasion!

Thomas was persuaded by Mum Joanne and Dad Steve to finally get in the car for the trek back to Taranaki. Signs of Thomas's visit showed. "Come again Thomas!" said Morfar, "and we will find other things to excite you!" Jo and Steve stayed almost opposite Greystone. It was an ideal situation with Greystone full and busy and gave them and Thomas some time for themselves. Thanks Steve. Having you all here made a great birthday gift for Sammo. One that will be always rembered with fond thoughts.

Monday was a 'blast from the past' for Evan, Sammo, Kristina, Suzanne , Carl and Isaac. In the days of yore when all were much younger (excluding Isaac of course) but including Joanne many happy hours were spent tramping Mt Taranaki and staying in huts. So what better way to celebrate another day together than with a visit to the 'bush.' The Waiohine swing bridge was the venue. It is a major new construction some 60+ m long and approx 50m over the river, which was in turbulent flow that day. Rain and snow melt made for a silky, frothy bluish flow. very exciting 'swinging away!' Hudson Riesling and cold chicken for lunch. Then off to the Paua Place at Carterton for 'shopping.' Sue and Isaac used Herbie the Roadster with the hood down much to Isaac's delight. Bloody cold though! Still you are only nearly 11 once in your life even though some of us still try and pretend something similar! No names!

Yes, the next day was farewell day and courtesy of a good snow dump on the Rimutakas Carl and Isaac drove Kristina and Suzanne to Palmerston North for the flight back to Brussels via Auckland. Much excitement for the Brisbane boys to see snow falling through Mt Bruce and then again on the Pahiatua Track. The risk of not getting across the Rimutakas was too great since the Air NZ flight to Heathrow left at 9.30pm with or without them. Once again Carl came to the rescue. Thanks Carl.

Thanks Carl and Isaac for your efforts!

A prostate operation (a TURP) was recommended for Evan on 4 August for 7 August following limited success with a cytoscopy the previous week. Before accepting Evan rang Carl and asked, "Can you control all the logistics for 15th and 16th?" "Yes," was the answer and a great deal of the success of the festivities was due to the hard work that Carl and Isaac put in. Much driving, trailer work with tables and chairs, setting up and finally removals. Driving your sisters to Palmerston North due to Rimutaka snowfalls and finally arranging and delivering gifts of appreciation to Lisa kept Carl and Isaac very busy. They even had time to take in the Wellington Phoenix playing the Queensland Roar at Westpac Stadium (1 all!). Many thanks Carl we couldn't have done it to the high standard without you and Isaac.

"This Post is proceeding so those who have not been mentioned yet - wait for it! Yes there was a photographer present on Saturday and you have been noted." Spelling and/or substantive content corrections welcomed.

Bird Boxes for Greystone

Bird boxes are ready to be put up up in time for spring nesting. Isaac from Brisbane and Thomas from New Plymouth have some work to do to help Farfar and Morfar. Yes! It is one and the same person! The names capture the family relationships perfectly.

04 August 2008

Spring is peeking around the corner at Greystone!

The circles of daffodils are well sprouted and the first of those around the 'greystone' came out in bloom during 3 August. They were 48 hours later than last year, but whose counting! The Cornubia rhododendron is out by the front stonewall and the prunus's and wild plums are all out around Greytown. The wattles have been out for some weeks as have the jonquills and japonica. The pictures below show the intending attendees (particulary those from the northern hemispohere) at Sammo's knees-up 15 - 16 August some of the glories that await them. The Magnolia campbelli is also looking likely to have its first blooms by 15 August.

Kiwiland has had two major storms in the last 10 days, both originating off the Queensland coast with very strong winds, heavy rain causing much damge flooding and slips. The Wairarapa escaped the worst since the wind was from the north however Northland, Auckland, Wellington, Manawatu/Horowhenua, Blenheim, Picton, Canterbury and deep south copped the worst. Tairawhiti (Gisborne/East Coast NI) also got hit hard. The temperature has been very warm also with some commentators stating the first storm was worse than the Wahine storm of April 1968 (the one that welcomed Joanne!) Now we are waiting for the southerlies to clear the ratbag weather and give us some much wanted sunshine.

A substantial number of homes in Auckland and Wellington have been badly affected by slips and residents ordered out for safety. Some of the homes are written off. Torbay and Aro Valley respectively were the worst affected due to slips.

More soon on the fine weather and comestibles ordered for Sammo's knees-up.

Picasso the Greystone Cat

Life just gets better at Greystone. I get invited in in the evenings or on cold southerly days and I get milk to go with my Whiskas and water (Sadie calls it aqua pura but I think its just water from the tap). Sammo bought me a Personal Pet Pad in Hamilton and I get carried inside on it (wrapped around me) and placed ever so gently in front of the fire.

I got growled at and had a bell put around my neck the other day 'cos I caught a blackbird that couldn't run as fast as me. I didn't know I had it in me but I had this burst of energy for 2.11 micro-seconds! I never chase birds and I really don't know what came over me. I tried to tell Sadie that this blackbird was being rude to me, but that didn't go down too well and now I have this bell thing that tinkles when I pass wind and waddle! Still this Personal Pet Pad is very nice.

Sally took some pictures of me and one of these is included. All the others were of me sleeping but Sadie said this one of me posing and flexing my Pectorals would be the most impressive for the Brussels' persons whom I lived with for 12 years before they went offshore.I recommend this Personal Pet Pad and am thinking (in between sleeps) that I may set up the master franchise for the Personal Pet Pads in Greytown. Next step could be Carterton or Featherston and then, well, the world! I could earn whilst I snored! Sadie said I would need a Business Plan and a hot-shot marketing guru to really take off. I said I was quite happy just keeping my feet on the ground and in any case if I recommended them then that would be enough. I reckon the best advertisement would be me sleeping quietly (zzzzzzz) on one.

Yours purrfectly, Picasso the big fat 15 year old cat. (Dictated by me, Picasso, and typed by Sadie)

PS "Isaac and Thomas are coming" to see me very soon so I better get in some good sleeps before they arrive! Don't forget those new PJ's Thomas and Isaac I have heard that Kangaroos are good eating (if you can catch them)!

Sammo's Knees-Up - Progress #1

In order to cater for the lads from Brisbane's arrival next month, Sadie (continuing his/her customer satisfaction approach) has established by direct contact what food supplies the lads will need. The usual list for an 11 year old (well almost 11) arrived however there one one addition that only Sadie could supply.

Isaac loves Farfar's home-baked bread. A sample picture shows what a glorious loaf will be supplied. The cookie eating monster doesn't eat bread, not without cheese and whiskey that is, so the loaf will be safe from his gustatory attentions.
Thomas's food needs (ie finger food for starving grandsons) also need to be met. So Sadie (with his Morfar's assistance) will attend to that. 4 year olds are a particular challenge in the finger food stakes!

Signed off by Isaac's Farfar and Thomas's Morfar with Sadie's beady eye watching closely.
